A Special Carnival Ball

Mardi Gras season brings parades, fun and celebrations. Carnival balls are one of the big ways clubs host wonderful parties. One special Carnival ball is celebrating its third Mardi Gras season in St. Tammany. This ball is for the special needs community and was held March 9, 2019.

St. Tammany Parish key clubs in the area host this wonderful event at the Covington YMCA. This free event was for those that are 13 and over where patrons enjoyed music, dancing and food. This year they honored the Aktion Clubs of STARC West and Greater Covington /ARC of Greater New Orleans Northshore Community Center.

“The event is targeted toward teenagers and adults, so while we would never turn anyone who shows up away, we ask that guests be at least 13 years of age,” Anna Kate Broussard, the St. Tammany Key Club lieutenant governor and St. Scholastica Academy senior said. “We will have plenty of food and drink as well as seating, so dates, parents and friends of those with special needs whom we are honoring are also welcome to attend.”

Traditional Mardi Gras purple, green and gold decorated the ball. Everyone wore their “Sunday Best” and some even adorned mask.

“We could not have dreamed for the event to go better,” Broussard said. “It was never intended to be an annual affair, but because of the success and the fun that was had during the event, we began to wonder how we could not repeat the event.”
